Walk the Kiez

Whole streets of 19th-century houses, squares with markets, and a hill with a water tower.

  1. Park & garden Prenzlauer Berg Free

The leafy square at the heart of the Kollwitzkiez, named after the artist Käthe Kollwitz, who lived here. On Thursdays about 40 stalls set up for the organic market, 30 years old in 2026: get something to eat and walk on to the water tower.

Good to know: Ökomarkt every Thursday, 12:00–19:00 (until 18:00 from January to March). There’s a Saturday market too.

  2. Park & garden Prenzlauer Berg

Berlin’s oldest water tower, built in 1877 and known as “Dicker Hermann”, with flats still lived in inside it and a small park around it on the hill. There’s a memorial too: in 1933 the SA used the site as an early concentration camp.

Good to know: A park, open all the time, a few minutes’ walk from Kollwitzplatz.

  3. Park & garden Prenzlauer Berg Open 24/7

The park on the old Wall strip between Prenzlauer Berg and Wedding. On Sundays there’s the flea market, and from May to October Bearpit Karaoke in the amphitheatre at 15:00; any evening, the slope is a good place to sit.

Good to know: Flea market Sundays 10–18. The karaoke stops for the winter at the end of October, and when it rains.

See something

A museum, a dome of stars and a small cinema.

  1. Museum Prenzlauer Berg Free Open till 18:00

Everyday life in the GDR, free, in the red-brick Kulturbrauerei. Its courtyards have a cinema and bars for after, and from 23 November the Lucia Christmas market moves in.

Good to know: Tuesday to Friday 9–18, weekends 10–18. Parts of the permanent show are closed until early December.

  2. Cinema Prenzlauer Berg Price: Budget Opens 15:00

A planetarium on Prenzlauer Allee, opened in 1987 and modernised since, with a 23-metre dome and 307 seats. A music show under the stars is a date that does the talking for you.

Good to know: Music shows €16, science shows €12. Late shows on Fridays, often starting at 23:00.

  3. Cinema Prenzlauer Berg

A small cinema showing films from Central and Eastern Europe with German or English subtitles, and silent films with a live pianist. You’ll see something neither of you has heard of.

Good to know: Check the programme for English subtitles before you go.

  2. Restaurant Prenzlauer Berg Opens 17:00

  3. Restaurant Prenzlauer Berg Opens 17:30

Drinks, and something to do

Cocktails, wine, old Berlin beer, and a dance class if you’re brave.

  1. Cocktail bar Prenzlauer Berg Opens 20:00

Prenzlauer Berg’s best-known cocktail bar, with Samuel Beckett’s portrait in the window instead of a sign. Dim, quiet, and every drink made with care.

  2. Wine bar Prenzlauer Berg Opens 18:00

  3. Bar Prenzlauer Berg Opens 16:00

A pub opened in 1913 with a lottery win and run by the same family ever since; Udo Lindenberg and Sergio Leone have drunk here. If your date wants old Berlin, this is it.

Good to know: Weekdays from 16:00, Saturdays from 18:00. Closed Sundays.

  4. Bar Prenzlauer Berg Price: Mid-range Opens 16:00

  5. Live music Prenzlauer Berg

Tango for beginners on Friday evenings with no booking needed, followed by a milonga where you can watch people who have danced for years. Being beginners at the same thing, badly, is a good date.

Good to know: Friday practica 19:30–21:00, €20 (€15 reduced); milonga from 21:00.

Getting your bearings

  • Prenzlauer Berg came through the war with less damage than the rest of the inner city: over 80 % of its flats are older than 1948, which is why whole streets of 19th-century tenements are still standing.
  • It’s a string of Kieze: the Kollwitzkiez (Kollwitzplatz, the Kulturbrauerei, the water tower), the Helmholtzkiez or “LSD quarter” (Lychener, Schliemann and Dunckerstraße, around Helmholtzplatz), the Winsviertel and the Bötzowviertel. Start with the Kollwitzkiez.
  • Getting there: the U2 to Senefelderplatz or Eberswalder Straße, the Ringbahn to Schönhauser Allee or Prenzlauer Allee, or the M1, M2 and M10 trams.
  • Worth a look on the way, though not picks: Konnopke’s Imbiss under the elevated U2 (sausages since 1930, currywurst since 1960), the Gethsemanekirche, where the candlelight vigils of autumn 1989 took place, and the old Jewish cemetery on Schönhauser Allee (open weekdays only, Fridays until 13:00).
